Upgrading metropolitan railway junctions and key national rail networks

What is the goal of the investment?

The measure has the goal of improving mobility in large cities and in mid-sized urban areas through medium range travel services characterised by speed and comfort, thanks to the creation of "fast regional" connections. The goal is to render train transport more  convenient and therefore competitive with respect to private vehicles, increasing accessibility and interchange between the rail way stations and the underground

Additional details

The planned interventions will cover different areas of the country, especially border areas (for example, the strengthening of connections with the Swiss passes on the Liguria-Alps line), as well as central lines and access to ports, particularly in the Southern regions. The investment consists in the enhancement of 1280 km of rail way lines created on 12 metropolitan city intersections and main national connections, in particular: Liguria-Alps, Cross country, Bologna-Venice-Trieste/Udine, Central and North Tyrrhenian, Adriatic-Ionian, South Tyrrhenian Connection, Sicilian network, Sardinian network.
