High-speed railway connections to the South for passengers and freight

What is the goal of the investment?

Create 274 km of high velocity railway systems on the Naples-Bari, Salerno-Reggio Calabria, Palermo-Catania lines to reduce the travel times and increase transport rail capacity going South. The interventions will be integrated with the regional transport systems, which play a primary role in supporting the demand of local mobility.

The Naples-Bari tract will be covered in 2 hours, instead of the current time of 3 hours 30 minutes with an increase in capacity from 4 to 10 trains/hour on the sections with double tracks; there will be an adjustment to the services to allow the transit of freight trains up to 750 m, with no axial weight limitation. For the Palermo-Catania-Messina line there will be a creation of intermediate tracts in the project, upon completion the journey between Palermo-Catania will decrease by over 60 minutes (it is now over three hours), with an increase in capacity from 4 to 10 trains/hour on the sections being doubled; Finally, on the Salerno-Reggio Calabria tract, the journey will decrease by 80 minutes: to consent for improved freight train transit, moreover, for the port of Gioia Tauro significant additional resources will be provided.
