Additional details

Freight transport by rail is much more environmentally friendly, yet there is a lack of the necessary connections to reduce the use of road transport and, above all, there is no electrical infrastructure on some sections of the rail links. Diesel is thus the only viable alternative, but it has a much greater impact in terms of CO2 emissions.  The €200 million funding will therefore be used to electrify these sections and modernise the most obsolete locomotives in order to reduce the environmental impact and support more sustainable freight transport.

What are the benefits?

New locomotives and carriages for:
  • More efficient transport of merchandise
  • A smaller environmental impact
  • A reduction in road transport
  • New job opportunities
