What is the goal of the investment?

The conversion to hydrogen of non-electrified railway lines in regions characterised by high passenger traffic with a strong use of diesel trains such as in Lombardy, Puglia, Sicily, Abruzzo, Calabria, Umbria and Basilicata. The most advanced projects in Valcamonica and Salento envisage the experiment in an integrated manner of production, distribution and purchase of hydrogen trains.

Total investment cost 300 million
  • Youth
  • Reduce the gaps in standards of living
  • Gender equality
Additional details

Another area of interest for hydrogen is the railway sector, in particular passenger rail transport. In Italy, approximately one tenth of the railway networks are served by diesel trains, that in certain regions are relatively old and should be substituted in the next few years. This is the perfect time to switch to hydrogen, especially where the electrification of trains is not technically feasible or competitive. Since to date there are no hydrogen refuelling stations for trains in Italy, the first step would be to develop high pressure electrolysers (TRL 5-7), high capacity storage systems with the possibility of using metal hydrides or liquids (TRL 3-5). Priority will be given to the areas in which synergy with long-haul truck distributors is possible, so as to increase the supply and demand of hydrogen and reduce the cost of production.

What are the benefits?

  • Reduce the environmental impact caused by transport of goods
  • Develop an efficient and effective system for the production of hydrogen and create work for the industries in that sector
  • Improve the quality of trips by renovating the trains on the entire national territory
