What is the goal of the investment?

Increase the diffusion of hydrogen in street transport,  promoting the creation of distributors for of trucks and cars and reaching at least 5-7% of the internal market within 2030. At least 40 petrol stations will be developed giving priority to strategic areas for heavy street transport: along the highways, close to ports and near logistical terminals.

Additional details

Long-haul truck transport is one of the most polluting segments of the transport sector, responsible for about 5-10% of total CO2 emissions. Increasing the use of hydrogen is fundamental not only for de-carbonisation but also to improve quality of life. The creation of approximately 40 petrol stations is expected for trucks and cars working under the pressure of the over 700 bars. Priority will be given to strategic areas for heavy street transport such as areas next to internal terminals and the more direct routes used by long-haul trucks (Green and Digital Corridor del Brennero, cross-border project, East-West corridor from Turin to Trieste). Introducing hydrogen as an energy carrier is an absolute novelty in the management of the energy system. Therefore two reforms are expected to pass to define the list of norms at 360 degrees; the first will intervene on the technical norms (such as production safety, transport and storage of H2), the second would be on measures to incentivize production and consumption.

What are the benefits?

  • Limit pollution due to the use of fossil fuels;
  • Reduce the environmental impact caused by transport of goods;
  • Develop an efficient and effective system for the production of hydrogen and create work for the industries in that sector;
  • Renovate the roads and central transport intersections where the new petrol stations will be installed.
