What is the goal of the investment?

To improve the use of biomethane, a renewable energy source obtained from agricultural biomass (i.e., dedicated crops, agricultural and organic waste) or agro-industrial biomass (i.e., waste from food supply chain production). The goal is to improve biomethane production by 2.3-2.5 billion cubic meters, which would allow a reduction in the use of greenhouse gases by 80 percent or more.

Additional details

The development of biomethane, obtained by maximizing energy recovery from organic residues, is strategic for enhancing a circular economy based on reuse, and is a major element for the achievement of European de-carbonisation targets. If transported in the gas grid, biomethane can contribute to reaching 2030 targets with an overall reduction in greenhouse gases of between 80 to 85% compared to the life cycle of fossil methane. Several lines of action are envisaged:
• convert already existing agricultural biogas plants to biomethane production for industry, transportation and heating;
• financially support the construction of new facilities;
• disseminate ecological practices in the production phase of biogas (minimum soil use for processing sites, innovative low-emission systems for the distribution of the processed product) to reduce the use of synthetic fertilizers and increase the supply of organic material in the soil;
• promote the replacement of at least 300 inefficient and dated tractors with vehicles fuelled by methane/biomethane and equipped with precision farming tools.

What are the benefits?

Improved use of biomethane for
  • Reducing greenhouse gases and recovering organic waste that would otherwise go unused
  • More efficient, effective and ecological companies
  • More work for companies working in the area of plant conversion
